PRINTSIDE - new exhibition of printmaker's work at the Bond Gallery

Today members of Birmingham Printmakers put up an exhibition at the Bond cafe Gallery. The exhibition opens tomorrow on the 22nd October and will run to the middle of January. Much of the work reflects the gallery's setting by the canal side. Paul Hirst, artist in residence at the Bond, curated the exhibition. His selection is varied, with traditional and less traditional techniques sitting along side each other. The work has a strong affinity with the space and offers a little more interaction perhaps than you would see with a traditional gallery space. The exhibition is located at 180 - 182 Fazeley Street, Digbeth in the cafe area of the Bond. It is a great place to take a break and spend some time looking at the work. More info on the work and exhibition to follow.

New work by JO RUTH and SUE HALSTEAD

Jo Ruth is a member of Birmingham Printmakers. Both artists are exhibiting work that explores aspects of the natural world in the Midlands.

Jo's new images of urban and rural bird life are produced using a variety of stencilling and painting techniques. Once the stencil has been made the image can be recreated, or ‘reprinted’ in a variety of ways allowing her to develop and explore the image.

Sue’s most recent work is based on the geology and landscape of the area. Rock formations, strata, fossils and other geological features often occur in her work, although she also interested in the marks left on the land by man’s activities. Sue uses watercolour, inks, dyes, drawing, collage and sometimes even stitching in her work.

Tessa Sidey R.I.P

Birmingham Printmakers would like to express their sadness at the death of Tessa Sidey earlier this month and convey our sympathy to her family and colleagues.

As well as curating a series of hugely popular exhibitions including several on aspects of Pre-Raphaelite artists, she was a highly regarded academic with a number of publications and lectured at The Barber Institute.

With a strong passion for original print, Tessa did much to promote the medium and was an enthusiastic patron and support to Birmingham Printmakers which was especially valued when we were threatened with closure.

Above all we will miss her energy, enthusiasm and fun.
